CARING FOR YOUR CHILD AFTER IMMUNIZATION

Some children may feel mild discomfort after getting a shot. This may last 1 to 2 days. More serious side effects are very rare. 

Common: 
 
  • Redness, pain, and swelling where the shot was given
  • Fever 1 to 2 days after the shot, lasting 1 to 2 days
  • Cranky, fussy, irritable

Possible:
 
  •  After oral rotavirus vaccine: diarrhea, stomach pain, gas 
  • After MMR or chickenpox vaccine: A fever, rash or both may appear up to several weeks after the shot 

After the shot
 
  • Cuddle your child 
  • Hold your child sitting up
  • Apply a clean, cool, wet washcloth to sore area 
  • Give your child lots of liquid. It’s normal for some children to eat less during the 24 hours after getting vaccines.
  • Fever medicine helps fever, sore arms or legs and fussiness
  • Give the medicine every 4 to 6 hours 

Get to a doctor right away if your child has any of these problems: 

  • High fever – 39°C (102.2°F) or higher 
  • Weakness and looks pale or sick
  •  Increased sleepiness and does not wake to eat 
  • Crying for more than 3 hours
  • A strange cry, different than normal cry 
  • Hives (raised red or pink spots of different sizes on skin)
  • Seizure or convulsions (shaking, twitching or jerking motions of the body) 
  • Swollen abdomen, vomiting often, bloody stools 
  • A fever for more than 48 hours
